I kept chickens for a while in the 90s, and I learned that chicken personality is..... well let's just say mine weren't exactly beloved pets. Such great advice- I wish I would have had it then!
Great article. I kept a flock of 25-30 chickens in my youth. We had an egg route, which became a problem when the flock stopped laying and was replaced. We had a LOT of chicken for a couple months. And the ammonia from cleaning the coop in the spring just about killed me. My breath is short and eyes watering just thinking about it.
30 chickens! That's a real flock. Yes, egg production isn't easy to manage. Even my farmer friends pull their hair out trying to maintain production and always trying to anticipate when to cull the flock. I am a lot more hands off. How old were you? Do you remember what it felt like when you had to turn the hens into dinner? I'm still trying to teach that lesson to my kiddos.
